How to use spray tanning in modeling.

Do you have experience of how spray tanning is used in modeling industry?

Yes, I have. I worked in a very beautiful town in Australia which is a favorite for photo shoots with many photographers. The area is especially popular as a swimsuit photo shoot location. I have spray tanned many models before a photo shoot.

In your experience, is spray tan used for child and teenage models?

Children are very rarely asked to be tanned for assignments. In fact, with skin cancer being so high up on people’s mind, photographers steer away from obviously tanned children, even for swimsuit shots. When it comes to teenage advice however, light tan is more often desirable, but it depends on what the assignment is about. The agency will be able to tell you what is expected.

What teenage advice about tanning would you give to mothers of teen models?

If your child would like a long career in modeling never, ever let them use solariums and when in full suntan, make sure they are wearing sun block. Their skin is one of the most important assets in the modeling industry, so they need to keep it young and beautiful as long as possible. Sun tanning and especially solarium beds have devastating effect on young skin. Working in tanning industry I have seen many instances when girls in their mid twenties would have skin of 35 year olds after just few years of regular solarium tanning. Spray tanning and self tanning products are the only ones that should be used as they do not damage the skin.

Besides, pale skin can actually increase your child’s versatility when it comes to modeling assignments because if there is a call for tanned skin, a tan can be acquired in few minutes, and it will wear off in few days, while solarium tan needs quite few sessions to acquire safely and takes longer to wear off. If your child or teenager has only “tanned” photos in their portfolios, they will be typecast. If however they have mostly “pale” photos and only a couple “tanned” ones, the agency will know that they can take on any job.

Is spray tanning and self tanning safe? Generally, spray tanning is considered safe, however keep in mind that spray tanning solution is a chemical cocktail, and different companies add different ingredients, some of which might not be as good for your health as you might hope. So, don’t overuse it, especially on a child. If you must: use something like Safetan, which is a self tanner that contains only natural, very safe ingredients. It comes with an easy to use applicator, so any parent can do a good job giving their child a tan, without compromising their health.

Is it harmful to breathe in the mist in a spray tan booth? The spray tanning industry would like you to believe that it is very safe, and that there will be no harm from breathing the mist (certainly there have not been any publicized instances of “spray tan booth mist poisoning”). However, the spray tanning industry is only very young, so we do not know what long term effects might be. That is why I would advise you to wear nose filters (and obviously keep your mouth shut during spray tanning cycle). If the salon does not provide nose filters, just use a bit of cotton ball loosely stuffed up your nose to be on the safe side.

How to prepare for a spray tan? It is a good idea to scrub down very well a day before spray tan to get rid of excessive dead skin, especially around knees and elbows where often there is a buildup of skin cells. If you need to shave, it is best to do it at that time as well. Next day have a shower before spray tan, but do not use any moisturizers. Depending on the salon, they might want you to put some moisturizing lotion on your knees, elbows and palms of your hands to stop excessive color in those areas. Wear dark, loose clothing after a spray tan as it takes about an hour to “set” properly and some of it will rub off on your clothes. Do not come in contact with water for at least 6 hours (some salons say 12 hours). If you get wet before your tan sets, it will be patchy.

Question: How do you keep your tan nice for a long time?

With spray tanning, only dead skin cells are affected, so you have to make sure that they are well moisturized. The drier your skin is, the faster the cells will fall victim to a natural exfoliation process and the faster your tan will wear off. If you moisturize your whole body daily, you will extend the life of your tan an extra few days. Spray tanning salons often have special tan extending products, and the most useful one of those is a body moisturizer that contains some spray tanning solution. Because it adds a little bit of color every time that you moisturize you will “boost” your tan every time you apply it, and it will also repair some possible minor damage to the tan as it wears off.

Question: Is it true that you can look like you have more muscle definition with a spray tan?

Yes you can. Generally darker skin color accentuates muscles. That is why body builders go into competition deeply tanned. However, a skilled technician that is good with a HVLP spray gun can actually give you muscle where there is little or none. The idea is to play with light and shade thus creating an illusion that some parts of the body are either smaller or bigger than in reality. Parts of the body that we want to “deepen” or minimize are spray tanned darker color than the rest of the body. For example, if you make the hips slightly darker than the rest of the body, they will looks slimmer. You can “get” more definition to your abs, you can make your breasts appear larger, you can look like as if you have smaller waist etc. It all comes down to the skill of the technician.

What to do if the spray tan goes wrong? There are only two things that can go wrong with a spray tan. It can turn out a bit orange or a bit patchy.

To make sure that you don’t finish with an orange or patchy spray tan, ask only for the lightest tan. That will give you that sun kissed look. The darker the tan, the more chance of it turning out orange. It will also wear out uneven, and so you will become patchy.

There is not very much that can go wrong with a light spray tan. If however it is a bit uneven, smooth on a little bit of moisturizer that contains some spray tanning solution. The colors will blend more. Some excessive color can be gently exfoliated, either with and exfoliating glove, or a cosmetic product.
