5 Reasons to Play Sports

- Promotes a healthy lifestyle: There are 3 components to a healthy lifestyle. They are eating healthy food; getting the right amount of sleep and getting enough exercise. Playing sports will benefit you in each of these areas. Playing sports obviously will increase the time you spend exercising. And, that exercise will promote a healthy appetite (you just need to eat good stuff; not junk). Finally, there's nothing like good exercise to help you get a good nights sleep.
- Socialization: This one easy. Especially when you are a kid playing sports on a team, you play with others and make friends. You meet other people and learn how to get along with different people. You learn how having something in common with someone (the sport you are playing) will often open doors to finding out other things you have in common. And, often this will lead to making a new friend. And, because you enjoy playing the sport together, your friendship is more likely to be long-lasting. Who knows, it may even last a lifetime.
- Develop Important Character Traits: This is another big one. Playing sports will help you learn teamwork, goal setting, dedication, time management and how to deal with adversity (i.e. losing) as well as success (winning). I could easily write an entire article on the importance of each of these character traits to your future happiness and success in life. But, if you think about it, you already know how playing sports will help you develop these important character traits.
- Promote Self Esteem: If you dedicate yourself to a sport you will get better and better at it. Going through that process will increase your confidence and positive view of yourself. You will understand what a great person you are and how your hard work and dedication makes you an even better person.
- Have Fun! This is really important and probably the best thing of all about playing sports. The reason is that for the 4 benefits listed above to last a lifetime, you need to enjoy what you are doing to make those things happen. Sports are fun and enjoyable. This is especially true if you get good at one (or more) of them. And, because you are having fun and enjoying playing a sport you are more likely to keep it up and reap the benefits of it for your entire life.
So, play sports and have fun!!
[Oh, I forgot, another benefit of playing sports that your parents will probably be really interested in is that your hard work just might pay off with a scholarship, maybe even to a college in the Southeastern Conference. Of course, I'm biased as you'll see if you visit SEC Sports Fan]
